Until this film, the words Football, Tondo and Happyland didn't seem to fit together in any logical way in a sentence. It's set in a part of Tondo called Hapilan which means Garbage Dump. The refuse is so pervasive that houses seem built on it instead of the distant memory of soil far below.

Vox Populi is a film that comes several months too late. If this film were shown before the elections, it would've been one of the most important films of the year - not outcome changing, but definitely one of the most important. This is truly sad as there is one scene in the candidate's van at the start of the film that explains traditional local elections in a tidy nutshell. If they found a way to integrate a showbiz candidate in there, it would tell you all. With the local elections represented in this film acting as a microcosm of our national elections, that would make Vox Populi a dabbler in educational film. All of that is lost because of when it was shown.

Donor has some of the most incredible visuals ever exhibited at Cinemalaya, if not the very best. Stunning natural vistas as the usual source for a cinematographer to display his skills, but Cinematographer Jay Abello uses the urban sprawl to show off and show off he does. All of Cinemalaya this year is in HD but this is the first entry that looked like it.

In an ideal world, a summer fling is with a sweet and innocent girl and a tall dashing boy. Add some Disney ears to it and call the girl Hanna Montana as she rediscovers her country roots and sheds her city folk ways. The boy in Mayohan is hardly dashing nor tall and while he is easily liked, the locals describe him as "di pa tuli". The girl is sweet but she's no innocent. Disney ears are absent here but the uncle does happen to be Goofy.

Sigwa is a film made to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the 1st quarter storm, a particularly tumultuous period of 3 months in our nation's history just before herr Marcos declared martial law. Unlike most communist anniversaries, this is an event that commemorates a bloody revolutionary event where they lost. This film is no communist victory however. This film is a story about the relationship of a group of friends as they happen from two initial snapshots, one taken in 1970 and another in 2009 and what happens after those snapshots are taken.

Directed by three women, starring four women and entitled Ganap na Babae - with the english title, "Garden of Eve" - the opening film of Cinemalaya 2010 has all the emblemage of a feminist film, a breed of film that straight males usually avoid because it's almost guaranteed to reduce us by about three inches in shrinkage and cause massive loss of testosterone. A little patience with the technical foibles of it's screening at the premiere reveals that it may be a film for women about women but it doesn't punish men for watching. It is in fact quite rewarding.

The idea for Emir was supposedly from outgoing president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. She got the idea when she visited an Arab nation and the son of the ruling family surprised her when he spoke fluent Tagalog. She handed over the idea to the Film Development council of the Philippines with the intention of Emir becoming a tribute to herself in cinematic form but I am delighted to say that as an advert for Gloria Arroyo, it fails miserably - but only as an advert for her. With that out of the way, Emir can now stand on it's own.

Independent film is supposed to be painful to watch, isn't it?

There are assloads of vampyric interest about right now. At the beginning of the decade, we were all agog about magic and wizardry care of the Scooby Gang of Hogwarts. Nowadays, we're into anything with fangs. The stories are all passed on as romantic tales that just happen to have some action or horror to them as well as consumption of hemoglobin. In any fad however, there will always be that ONE FILM that distinguishes itself from the others.
