Independent film is supposed to be painful to watch, isn't it?

Let The Right One In

There are assloads of vampyric interest about right now. At the beginning of the decade, we were all agog about magic and wizardry care of the Scooby Gang of Hogwarts. Nowadays, we're into anything with fangs. The stories are all passed on as romantic tales that just happen to have some action or horror to them as well as consumption of hemoglobin. In any fad however, there will always be that ONE FILM that distinguishes itself from the others.

A Pleasant Surprise

I watched Urduja the very day it officially started showing in local theaters: June 18. I watched it for probably the same reason other people—Filipinos, certainly—would go to the movies to do likewise: out of sheer curiosity.
Did I have fun?
Why, yes, I did.

Brutal Majesty

Tribu is exquisitely filthy. Kadin, Still Life and Ligaw Liham were the beauty queens of Cinemalaya. Tribu is the slut in torn fishnets, a leather micromini and an aqua blue tube top made of lycra. Tribu's Tondo is the beautiful bitch and she'll luv you long time for a price. Usually your wallet, sometimes your life.

This is your life

Endo is a love story completely devoid of romance. It's the most honest love story you'll see. With respect to Jim Libiran and Tribu, this is the most realistic movie at Cinemalaya.

You can relate to Endo more than any other film from this year's batch, unless of course you've murdered a rival gangmember or lost a goat lately. You are, you've been or you will be either Sugar, Tanya or Leo at least once in your lifetime.

"Malaking karangalan... na ako'y naging bahagi ng isang pelikulang tunay na matimbang na serbisyo sa demokratikong pakikibaka ng sambayanang Filipino." - Bien Lumbera, National Artist for Literature

"Manolito Sulit, the Filipino poet cum director and scriptwriter of this film envisions a criss-crossing of time, genre, form, and narrative to bring out a contemporary reading of local/national Filipino life." - Rhod Nuncio (Barako: Between Awakening and Apprehensions)

High School Musical - Pisay the Review

The students and alumni of Philippine Science must find a great deal of gratification in the fact that Pisay the movie is jsut as hard to get into as Pisay the school. The movie was impossible to get tickets for at Cinemalaya, even days in advance. It seemed like every student and alumni of Pisay had bought up every single ticket. What they got for their money was a nice little romp into the 80's but without the big hair or Motley Crue. Great pseudo 80's soundtrack too.

Still Life semi spoiler review

Still Life along with Endo and Tribu were the three best full length films of Cinemalaya 2007. Considering the quality of this year's batch, that's saying a great deal. The lead is played by thespian and film noob Ron Capinding. As good as he may be onstage, the breakthrough performance of Glaiza DeCastro makes you forget he's even there. She's that damn good here. This is nothing like the Glaiza you see on the idiot box. This is the actor with something to prove and in Still Life, she proves her worth well. Angel who?
