'Independencia' and 'Imburnal' win awards in 7th Bangkok International Film Festival

Filipino filmmakers bring good news to their countrymen as thousands recover from the destruction brought about by typhoon Ondoy.

The black-and-white film Independencia bagged two prizes in the 7th edition of the Bangkok International Film Festival. Imburnal was given a Special Mention in the filmfest that took place in Thailand from September 24-30.

MANILA, Philippines -- Filipino filmmaker Pepe Diokno’s “Engkwentro” won the top prize in the Orizzonti (New Horizons) section of the 66th Venice International Film Festival.

Diokno, who received the award in the Italian city, confirmed his triumph in a text message to the Inquirer Sunday morning.

He competed with 24 other films from Vietnam, Egypt, Peru, Russia, Tunisia, Italy, China, Germany and the United States, among others.

HBO open to producing films in RP

HBO IS LOOKING into a possible collaboration with local producers. A top official of the movie cable channel expressed confidence that it would soon produce original short films in Asian territories, including the Philippines.

“We are constantly talking to potential partners,” said Robert Lyons, senior VP for programming, in an interview with Inquirer. He clarified, however, that “nothing concrete” has been reached.

Makati eyes tax exemption for RP films

MANILA, Philippines -- In a move to help the movie industry in the face of problems with piracy, Makati City intends to amend an ordinance to exempt Filipino movies from amusement taxes.

In a statement Monday, Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay said he has asked the Makati City Council to approve an ordinance amending the city’s tax code.
