We only have one life, and a life with a simple and ordinary existence can be challenged by luck and death. Just like the game of luck in “Jueteng,” we have many chances to win the jackpot by always trying and wishing. However, we cannot get whatever we want without hard work. We must not only hope and try; we must weigh our choices in life and work hard to achieve happiness and contentment.
SYPNOSIS:
Aling Amy, an aging “kubrador” for “Jueteng,” walks around her poor squatters’ neighborhood to do her job, which kept them living for almost 20 years. Despite the illegal numbers game daily crackdown, she continues doing her work in able for her and her husband to have additional income. Mang Eli, her husband only helps her by managing their sari-sari store every day. Their children have all grownups and left them home; Mona, their eldest daughter works abroad as a domestic helper. Juvy, their second daughter lives with her in-laws who is always pregnant and who is her husband have no permanent job. And Eric, their youngest and only son who was a young soldier and died on a combat in Mindanao.
One day, while collecting bets on the street, a police officer seized her, and she joined with other “kubradors” on the police station. She thought that they will be behind cells, but suddenly, the chief officer handed her a bet and 200 pesos and let her go. While having an exit from the chief’s office another police officer called her to bet.
The next day, Aling Amy returns on her routine. On her way, she saw an owner jeep and thought it was the police officer who apprehended her last day. Luckily, it was the parish priest “Father Buboy,” who informed her of a young neighbor died in an accident. And asked her to collect “abuloy” from her friends and neighbors.
She went home tired and unwell after collecting bets and abuloy, so she skipped her dinner and laid down to rest. As resting, she felt someone rubbing her forehead, which made her feel comfortable until she had fallen asleep.
Another day of collecting bets, she found herself lost and didn’t know where she had entered. She couldn’t remember where she passed through, she saw a man and she followed him until she had exit that place. When she remitted her collection to her handler (kabo), she found him unwell at home and then asked her to attend a jueteng draw on his behalf.
On her way to the place of draw, she saw her son’s image on “Baste” and called him as Eric. On arriving at the place, they wait until the table manager arrives to start the draw. But when he arrived, he announced that the draw was cancelled and declared the winning numbers from the jueteng financier.
Amy went home tired that night, her husband Mang Eli told her that he forgot to give her their neighbor’s bet which is one of the winning numbers. She had no choice and pissed off went back to her handler and borrow money in able for her to pay her neighbor.
A massive crowd greeted Amy and her family as they draw near the cemetery. They saw Glenda, Eric’s girlfriend, on his grave offering flowers for her dead boyfriend. Still pissed off with her husband, Amy left and wandered around the cemetery to cool off. Suddenly she heard a fight. Two vehicles figured in a crash. The two drivers appoint on an intense argument until one of them pulled out a gun and fired a shot. The bullet passed Amy and hit a teenage boy behind her. She shouted for help, police arrived and arrested the suspect. Bystanders helped her load the boy on a vehicle. Still in shock, Amy followed with stare as the vehicle went away the crime scene.
