December at the UPFI Film Center

Cine Veritas - UP Film Institute's annual human rights festival - topbills main events and screening highlights for December 2010 at all venues of the UPFI Film Center in Diliman.

Dakila Collective's Active Vista Filmfest with Governance Fair billed Re:PubliKo, Tudla's "Disquiet" presentation and Southern Tagalog Exposure and Artists Arrest's "Fact Sheet 5" exhibit and "Rights 3" premiere form part of this year's edition of Cine Veritas from December 6, Monday to December 10, Friday.

Featured films including "The Thank You Girls," "Last Supper No. 3," "Endo," "Jay" and "Senior Year" plus strings of shorts are lined up for the Active Vista screenings complemented by forums tackling social issues respectively involving security sector accountability, youth for local governance and Millenium Development Goals, access to justice by the poor, truth commissions among others. For its part, Tudla with "Disquiet" holds a media security seminar/workshop ands its own showcase of human rights films and poster art. "Rights 3" is the third installment of the pioneering compilation of independently produced human-rights themed short films and public-service advertisements initially brought about as a response to the rampant incidence of enforced disappearances in the country.

Also this month, get in line as Khavn De La Cruz gives you the gift of alternative cinema for four days straight. From December 1 to 4 Mondomanila FilmFest Motherfuckers (MFMF) will premiere "Mondomanila" at the Cine Adarna of the UPFI Film Center, as well as a video installation "Manilanimal" at the Bernal Gallery and Videotheque. "Mondomanila" is Khavn's latest masterpiece. It's an adaptation of Norman Wilwayco's Palanca-winning short story (2002), novel (2002), and script (2003). Explains Khavn, “It's a post-modern version of Edgardo Reyes' 'Sa Mga Kuko ng Liwanag'. It not only explores Manila and its humanity, it also delves into the whole rationale behind the irrational lives these people experience everyday.”

For Cinema One's 2010 Film Festival, UP Cineastes Studio screens one after the other three titles, namely, "Astro Mayabang," "Layang Bilanggo" and "Dagim" all on December 14, Tuesday at 5, 7 and 9 p.m.

A new outdoor photo installation, "Close Quarters" by Frankie Callaghan, will be on display at the back facade of the Film Center from December 10 until January 10.
