Real Time Writers (RTW)!

| | | | |

Last month, June 17, 2007, I, together with seven other students, graduated from Armando 'Bing' Lao's Advanced Scriptwriting Class held by the University of the Philippines Film Institute (UPFI). For six weeks starting, April 28, every Saturday and Sunday from 1pm to 6pm, we sweated it out, learning Bing's new methods and writing and submitting exercises in the hope that these lessons would make us better scriptwriters.

Indie Filmmaking: Making a Difference

| | | | | | |

Just finished watching ANC's Shop Talk hosted by Pia Hontiveros. The topic was Independent Filmmaking as a career and indie filmmakers Jim Libiran and JP Carpio were the guests. JP actually alerted me to the replay at midnight (Wednesday) -- I missed the Tuesday afternoon initial broadcast because I had to be somewhere.

Indeed, Philippine Cinema is alive and well. Just came from Cesare Syjuco's opening of his exhibit -- Cesare: "Mighty Big Flashback": His New Literary Hybrids -- at Mag:net Katipunan, and ran into Joel Toledo, Khavn dela Cruz, and John Torres.

A Filmmaker's Dream: JP Carpio's 'Momentaries' at Cinekatipunan

| | |

Last April 12, my friend JP Carpio’s collection of short films, ‘Momentaries’, was shown at Cinekatipunan at Mag:net Katipunan. I had suggested to JP –- mainly for selfish reasons (I live in the vicinity as you may already know) -- to contact Cinekatipunan’s programmer, Kiri Dalena, so that he could screen his films at the aforementioned venue.

'Manila 1945: The Forgotten Atrocities': A Necessary Remembering

| | |

Last February 19, 2007, on my birthday, Marie and I went to the Ateneo de Manila University to watch a movie that I had been looking forward to see -- Manila 1945: The Forgotten Atrocities, a documentary about the atrocities committed by the Japanese military towards the people of Manila on the eve of Japanese defeat during World War II.

Kidlat Tahimik Redux at Cinekatipunan

| | |

As part of the 30th anniversary celebration of his film 'Mababangong Bangungot' (Perfumed Nightmare), Kidlat Tahimik once again graced Cinekatipunan at Mag:net Cafe in Katipunan with his presence last January 26. He was accompanied by his mother and friends and other relatives. I came late, near the tailend of the screening, because I had a previous engagement and I had already seen the film years before when it was shown on the ABS-CBN channel during the World Cinema Centennial in the 90's.
